Purpose of Role

A PE Teacher, or Physical Education Teacher is responsible for teaching physical education and sports to school children. Their duties include planning and leading PE lessons, getting students to compete in sporting events and evaluating their performance.

Preamble

Job descriptions are subject to annual review and specific responsibilities will change to take account of the school development plan and the professional development of staff. All teachers need to promote the school ethos and health and safety and contribute to continuous school improvement. We are looking for a teacher with a desire to make a difference to the lives of young people, ideally with evidence of outstanding teaching and learning. Candidates should have a clear and good understanding of current educational issues, theory, and practice, including sound subject knowledge of Physical Education and Games. A commitment to teaching and a willingness to continue to learn through professional development is important in the role.

 

Key Responsibilities

Leading, managing and development of the PE curriculum for all students with emphasis on fixtures and events and assisting with the development of sport within the school curriculum. 

  • Leading, management and development of the PE curriculum.
  • Ensuring good curriculum and lesson planning for physical education.
  • Assisting the head of department with implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Physical Education improvement plan, including analysis of student progress.
  • Managing the resources and learning environment to promote high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Managing pupil development within the subject across the school.
  • Promotion of safe working practices. 

Leading and managing the learning and progress of students within the School curriculum, fixtures and extra-curricular activities.

  • Act as a role model for students in PE and Sport.
  • Be the initial point of contact for issues with regards to PE and Games and liaise with the head of faculty.
  • Organise and run extra-curricular clubs.
  • Monitor attendance and progress of students in lessons and clubs.
  • Lead, organise and develop fixtures and competitions for sport.
  • Organise and lead sports trips to help promote sport at the school. 

Specific responsibilities:

  • Assist in the running of the department. Develop and maintain schemes of learning that are working documents within the department and promote student achievement.
  • Promotion of the subject and celebration of achievement through displays, newsletters, and social media.
  • Keeping abreast of recent developments within Physical Education and working with colleagues to implement new initiatives into the department, curriculum and/or teaching and learning.
  • Maintain records of student learning, lesson observations and other data to support school self-evaluation and improvement.
  • Liaise with other staff to share relevant information about students’ learning and assessment.  
  • Attending school meetings and in service training, as and when required.  
  • Oversee the management of school teams and creation of fixtures.
  • To promote the department through whole school activities such as Open Evenings and assemblies.  
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties that the Head of Department or the Headteacher may feel appropriate.

 

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant qualification in Sports Science or Physical Education / PGCE
  • Relevant IGCSE experience
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the PE curriculum
  • Knowledge of PE examination processes and requirements for IGCSE level
  • Knowledge of physical exercises, stretching, nutrition and sports recovery
  • Knowledge of different rules and regulations for sports, including athletics and team sports
  • Basic knowledge of first aid and recognised first-aid certificate
  • Ability to pass an International Child Protection Certificate (UK) to work with children & able to provide Criminal Background Check covering the previous 10 years employment history.
  • Contract: Fixed Term (2 years) – renewal depending on performance
  • Able to commence in August 2023
