Head of Learning Support (EAL and SEND)


Main purpose of the role

This position is open to dynamic and inspiring subject leads who have a passion for delivering excellent attainment and achievement in EAL & SEND and have the vision to support a dynamic programme of support to ensure access to the rigours of our academic curriculum and the opportunities of our Co-Curricular programme.

Core Purpose

The postholder will:

   Ensure the highest possible standards of education through the promotion of effective teaching and learning; calling on the best research-based evidence to inform pedagogical practice in the teaching of EAL.

   Support the development of a comprehensive training programme to ensure our staff are equipped with the tools necessary to support EAL teaching.

   Play a key role in promoting the aims, values and ethos of Tenby School Penang.

We are fortunate to work with a Campus Principal who supports our schools to focus on what is important and relevant to them.  Our priorities focus on what we feel will make the biggest difference to our community.  For the current year, these include:

  • Reviewing our curriculum structures and offer, to support increasing numbers of students who are admitted with limited English proficiency.
  • Reviewing our options pathways to support personalised approached to learning.
  • Developing our links with parents and community organisations to support our students pastorally and academically.
  • Using our CPD cycles to support curriculum reflection and professional competencies that allows our students to benefit within well-informed and highly skilful quality first teaching.
  • Reviewing our curricula delivery to align key competencies and support a STEAM approach to active and engaged learning experiences.

Educational Experience

Leadership of EAL and / or SEND within a school setting.

Teaching of EAL across key stages – either KS1 / KS2 and / KS3 & KS4.

Developing & implementing strategies for achieving strong English acquisition for students.

Using evidence-based information to inform planning and teaching

Experience of teaching Cambridge iGCSE.

Experience of delivering to a diverse community of students including those for whom English is not their first language.

Initial interviews will be completed through Zoom. Final interviews will be carried out face-to-face whenever possible.

Shortlisting will be finalised on Friday February 10th 2023 and applicants will be advised whether they have been shortlisted by Tuesday February 14th 2023.


Final Interviews

The selection process will be discussed with the shortlisted candidates.  Candidates may be asked to undertake a practical task related to the knowledge and abilities in the Person Specification.

We are intending to interview for the post during week beginning February 26th 2023.


Notification of outcome

Shortlisted candidates will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible following the process.



Unsuccessful shortlisted candidates will have the opportunity for professional feedback during the week following the interviews.


Taking up post

The successful candidate will take up post on August 23rd 2023 – induction for new staff arriving in Malaysia will commence from Thursday 17th 2023.
