We are looking to appoint a positive, organised and approachable technician to support the Science Department at Claremont School. We are looking for a candidate with both strong communication and IT skills. The right candidate will be an experienced technician who is able to prepare practicals for GCSE and A level Sciences (including Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Prior experience of preparing Chemistry practicals to A level is not essential but would be an advantage. We are looking for a technician who is highly organised, effective at managing their own time and happy to work in a relatively fast paced environment. The ideal candidate will have prior experience and in-depth knowledge of COSHH and CLEAPSS. 

The successful candidate will work across four Science laboratories and be based in a central prep. room. They will support up to 7 part-time and full-time teaching colleagues and will report directly to the Head of Science as their line manager.

Responsibilities and duties

  • The provision of Science practicals for Biology, Chemistry and Physics as well as health/safety advice for teaching staff
  • Demonstrating the use of equipment to teaching staff when necessary
  • Keeping knowledge of hazards and risk assessments up to date - helping to ensure that COSHH regulations are carried out in the department
  • Organising, storing, repairing and cleaning of equipment 
  • Organising, storing and checking the condition of chemicals
  • Organising the safe storage of radioactive materials and liaising with the radioactive protection supervisor when appropriate. 
  • The safe treatment and disposal of waste materials including hazardous substances 
  • Preparing stock solutions 
  • Checking stock and keeping stock records 
  • Ordering equipment and materials by using the school ordering system 
  • Ensuring the school laboratories are clean and well stocked with teaching materials
  • Undertaking some reprographic duties or resource duties, as determined by the needs of the Science department (e.g. printing exam papers).  
  • Completing first aid training and recording any incidents using the school system 
  • Attend Science department meetings
