Library Assistant
Role Profile
Qualification, experience and skills:
- Graduation in Library Science
- Minimum two years of relevant library experience or training.
- Basic computer skills and Ms Excel Skill
- Basics in Microsoft Office Suite
- Proficient in Library Management software eg. KOHA, LIBSYS, barcoding of books and basic knowledge of institutional repositories e.g Dspace
- Basic communication skills in English.
Job role:
- Ability to remain professional and courteous while interacting with library patrons and students.
- Locates books or other reference materials to assist patrons.
- Examines books for damage; repairs or facilitates repairs when needed.
- Working knowledge of Dewey decimal system & OCLC.
- Assists with daily tasks of the library such as issuing new library cards, checking out library materials, receiving returns and determining outstanding materials.
- Stock verification and shelf rectification.
- Preparing Library weekly report.
- Monitoring and improving the effectiveness of the service provided by the library and its impact on teaching and learning.
- Supervising the students using the library for independent study and maintaining a welcoming, supportive atmosphere conducive to positive learning experiences.
- Monitors student behaviour in the library. Answers their questions and provides information concerning library resources; assists students in locating and accessing materials and topics for research, reference, and assignments when needed.
- Help the librarian on the school library programme for it to succeed.
