ISP Lab Technician Role Profile

Purpose of Role

The Science Lab Technician will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our high school science laboratories. This position involves a range of responsibilities related to laboratory maintenance, equipment preparation, and safety compliance, contributing to the overall success of our science programs.

ISP Lab Technician Key Responsibilities

  1. Lab Setup and Maintenance:
  • Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, materials, and chemicals for science experiments and demonstrations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, ensuring they are safe and conducive to learning.
  • Inventory and order lab supplies as needed, keeping track of stock levels.
  1. Equipment Maintenance:
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation regularly.
  • Coordinate repairs and calibrations with external vendors as necessary.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment issues and provide technical support to science faculty.
  1. Safety Compliance:
  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure that all laboratory activities comply with safety regulations.
  • Train students on proper laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and the handling of chemicals and equipment.
  • Maintain safety data sheets (SDS) for all chemicals in use and oversee their safe storage.
  1. Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with science teachers to support classroom activities and experiments.
  • Assist in the development of lab experiments and projects.
  • Provide guidance to students during experiments as needed.
  1. Documentation and Records:
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, inventory, and lab-related expenses.
  • Assist in documenting and organizing laboratory manuals and instructional materials.

Other duties and responsibilities

Any other duties that the principal may from time to time ask the post-holder to perform

 Qualifications and Experience

A high school diploma is required; an associate degree or relevant certification in a scientific field is a plus.

  • Previous experience as a lab technician or in a similar role is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and responsibilities.
  • Dedication to promoting a safe and engaging learning environment for students.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry laboratory equipment and supplies (up to 50 pounds).
  • Comfort working with chemicals and hazardous materials while following safety guidelines.
  • Standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods during lab setup and maintenance.

Purpose of Role

The role of Lab Technician mainly involves providing technical support, ensuring that equipment is functioning properly and is ready to use, and that the right materials are available for particular lessons. The Lab Technician works closely with students to explain or demonstrate experiments or how to use equipment as well as helping teachers with a class and supporting individual students. Ensuring the laboratory has all the necessary equipment, chemicals etc. available at all times. Accountable for the safety rules for the students, teachers and others if any.

ISP Lab Technician Key Responsibilities

Operational

  • Making up solutions, assembling apparatus, delivering equipment to rooms
  • Caring for plants and/or animals, where appropriate
  • Collecting, checking and returning equipment to stores
  • General Laboratory cleaning: bench surfaces and fixed equipment (laboratory sinks, emptying/supervising the emptying of sink traps)
  • Disposing of waste materials
  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss timetables, equipment requirements and work plans
  • Running trials of experiments prior to classes and then demonstrating techniques for experiments
  • Preparing equipment and chemicals before lessons - from test tubes to state-of-the-art microscopes
  • Record keeping, e.g. for students' practical sessions, tracking methods, results, etc.
  • Cataloguing equipment recordings and making them available when requested (if the department houses audiovisual resources)
  • Supporting the work of teachers in classes and laboratory sessions and giving technical advice to staff and students
  • Working with individual students and supporting them on research projects and demonstrations
  • Coordinating work in the laboratory to ensure efficient use is made of equipment
  • Creating and regularly updating the Laboratory Usage Manual

Maintenance

  • Maintaining and repairing equipment and laboratory apparatus
  • Taking care of laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Carrying out and arranging for maintenance and repair of resources.
  • Constructing and modifying apparatus.
  • Ensuring that equipment is properly cleaned and that, chemicals, drugs and other materials are appropriately stored
  • Managing the stock control of chemicals and equipment
  • Obtaining materials by local purchase

Technical

  • Carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms and stores
  • Providing technical support to experienced and trainee teachers including health and safety guidance
  • Keeping up to date with developments in practical science and health and safety requirements
  • Carrying out health and safety checks on laboratories, prep rooms and stores

 

General

  • Attend and participate in staff and working group meetings and training as appropriate
  • Adhere to and work within the schools’ practices and policies including those relating to Equal Opportunities

 

Health and Safety

  • Emphasizes the importance of safety in all areas of the curriculum, communicating to the pupils the importance of a responsible attitude towards personal safety, the safety of others and respect for The Hamilton International School’s property and equipment
  • Perform playground duties on time and with due diligence to safeguard Hamilton students
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct
  • Ensure that, all the necessary health and safety rules and procedures are being followed
  • Maintain an awareness of all the health and safety measures to be taken when in school

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in relevant discipline
  • Minimum 5 years’ working experience
  • General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in laboratory teaching
  • Ability to deal effectively with students and teachers

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers and students
