Role: Secondary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching

Line Manager: Head of Secondary

The Role

The Secondary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching will be responsible for standards of learning & teaching in Straits International School Rawang. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the role includes teaching English across the secondary phase. They will be required to implement the core tenets of ISP’s Learning First approach, including ensuring that Amazing Learning is present in lessons in the secondary phase across all subjects and across all year groups. The Secondary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching will be a model professional in terms of their own learning & teaching standards but will also support their fellow teachers with care, patience and attention to detail. The holder of this position will be committed to continuous improvement for both themselves and others, and will take a keen interest in the learning journeys of their peers, using a range of support strategies to secure required improvements. The Secondary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching will bring experience from other settings, but will also be fully cogniscent of the good struggles and phases of learning which are embedded into ISP’s approach to learning & teaching.

This document is designed to run alongside and extend the job description provided for a standard class teacher. Given the fluid nature of our developing school, this role is subject to some changes where necessary.

There are three overarching aspects to this leadership role:

Amazing Learning Lesson Visits Getting Better Teaching Responsibilities

Amazing Learning:

  • Ensure a consistent understanding and implementation of the key principles of ISP’s Learning First approach, including how this is implemented in Straits International School Rawang
  • Lead CPD and oversee daily standards of learning & teaching
  • Lead by example in terms of promoting Amazing Learning
  • Leading, developing and enhancing learning & teaching practices across the secondary phase
  • Work alongside the Primary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching in order to share best practice and to ensure consistency of approach across the whole school

Lesson Visits:

  • Alongside the Head of Secondary, coordinate lesson visits across the secondary   phase
  • Analyse and form effective narratives from lesson visits data, using patterns & trends to justify CPD choices which in turn secure required improvements in learning & teaching
  • Work alongside the Primary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching in order to share best practice and to ensure consistency of approach across the whole school

Getting Better:

  • Work with individual teachers and/or groups of teachers in order to secure required improvements to learning & teaching
  • Identify best practices across the secondary phase and use them to help both teachers and the school to get better over time
  • Work alongside the Secondary Assistant Head – Academic Outcomes in order to ensure high standards of student achievement across the secondary phase
  • Work alongside the Secondary Assistant Head – Student Welfare & Wellbeing in order to promote learning & teaching which helps to develop students in a holistic manner
  • Work alongside the Primary Assistant Head – Learning & Teaching in order to share best practice and to ensure consistency of approach across the whole school

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Teach English classes within the secondary phase curriculum.
  • Maintain high standards of teaching excellence and support students in their learning journey.

Requirement:

Skills, Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant teaching qualifications (PGCE OR Bachelor Education) or equivalent international teaching qualification
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Have up-to-date knowledge on the Cambridge International curriculum
  • Can deliver a balanced, broad and differentiated curriculum for their learners;
  • Can deliver well-planned, rigorous and interesting learning experiences for their students;
  • Have high expectations of learners with appropriate inspiration and challenge;
  • Encourage and contribute to a well-organised and inspiring learning environment;
  • Experience of integrating technology into learning and teaching;
  • Have a growth mindset to all aspects of school life;
  • Passionate and willing to go above and beyond for the school community. 
  • Able to commence in August 2025.
